Because Life Matters

The Reality

Suicide represents the largest cause of death for men under 50. In 2018, there were 6,507 suicides in the UK. 75% of these were males, which has been the case since the mid-1990s.

For every product sold via its website, Urban Jack donates £0.25 to organisations supporting positive Mental Health in men.

What is Mental Health

Sometimes referred to as Mental Well-being or Emotional Health, it is as important as Physical Well-being. If you have good mental health you will typically be making the most of your potential, be resilient to life's ups and downs and play a full part in your family, workplace, community and among friends.

Your mental health doesn’t always stay the same. It can change as circumstances change and as you move through different stages of your life.

And everyone is different. Just because someone is the life and soul of the party, the guy telling all the jokes over a pint, does not mean their Mental Health is in good shape.

Warning Lights

We all have times when we feel unmotivated, stressed or frightened. Normally those feelings pass but they can develop into more serious problems.

Five warning signs of potential Mental Health issues are:

Long-lasting sadness or irritability.

Extremely high and low moods.

Excessive fear, worry, or anxiety.

Social withdrawal, feeling of worthlessness

Dramatic changes in eating or sleeping habits.

Talking is good

It's normal for men to feel uncomfortable talking about their feelings.  There’s a stigma attached to it. Too often society says emotions aren't a manly thing.

Many men visit their doctor about physical symptoms but not emotional ones. Some embrace drugs or alcohol to try and cope. Sadly too many decide suicide is their only escape.

But it's healthy to know and say how your'e feeling. To share anxieties and thoughts. The power of talking - and of listening - must never be under estimated. Talk to a friend, trusted colleague or a specialist organisation or counsellor. It may be a key step in an important journey to better Mental Health.

What is Mindful Skincare?

Mindful Skincare is our recognition and desire to do something different. We are passionate about the ingredients we use and our carbon footprint. We are engaged about packaging waste. But we are also devoted to wanting to make a difference in those areas so commonly overlooked. As the slogan goes, it's alright not to be alright. Men have emotions and struggles. The statistics speak for themselves. Looking good is about feeling great - and about others feeling great as well. That's why for every product sold via our website we donate £0.25 to organisations supporting positive Mental Health in men.

Taking Time To Talk

We recently teamed up with George Ezra and Ollie MN supporting their brilliant podcast - Phone A Friend.

When long-time friends George Ezra and Ollie MN both experienced issues with mental health, they found comfort in opening up to one another about what they were going through. Phone A Friend is a podcast that captures their candid and light-hearted chats, with the intention of encouraging the listener to start conversations of their own. Each episode, George and Ollie share the ups and downs of their week and discuss how to balance mental health concerns with the other stresses of daily life.
